Tax Settings is part of Settings, which only Admins can open. Other roles still use these rates every day in the tax selector. Admins, Ops Managers, Sales Admins, and Sales Members can also add a rate on the spot with Create new in that selector.
Video: How to Create Tax Rates and Groups (1:53)
Open Tax Settings
Open Settings from the main navigation, then choose Taxes under System Configuration. The page has two tabs:- Tax Rate — every individual rate, with its Branches, Rate (%), and Status.
- Tax Groups — every group, with the Rates it combines, its Branches, its combined Rate (%), and its Status.
Create a tax rate
On the Tax Rate tab, click Create New, fill in the form, and click Create Tax Rate.- Name — what the rate is called, for example “King County.” This is the name your team picks in the tax selector, and customers see it on proposals and invoices.
- Tax rate (%) — the percentage, from 0 to 100. Decimals are allowed, for example
10.35. - Branches — the branches this rate is available to. A rate only shows in the tax selector for the branches you pick here, so a rate with no branches can’t be applied anywhere.
- Default rate per branch — one switch for each branch you selected. Turn a branch’s switch on to make this its default rate, which is applied automatically to new estimates on that branch and to new invoices you create from scratch. Each branch can have only one default.
- Internal tax description — optional notes for your records. Customers don’t see this.
- Is Active — leave this on so the rate can be used. Turn it off to hide the rate from the tax selector without deleting it.
If you make a rate the default for a branch that already had one, the new rate takes over. A message confirms the change, for example “Default tax changed from King County to Seattle for Seattle Branch.”
Create a tax group
A tax group adds several rates together into one choice. It’s useful when a location charges, say, a state rate plus a city rate and you want your team to pick them as a single item. On the Tax Groups tab, click Create New, fill in the form, and click Create Tax Group.- Name — what the group is called. Customers see this on proposals and invoices.
- Tax Rates — tick the rates to include. You need at least one. The Combined tax rate under the list adds up the rates you’ve ticked.
- Branches — the branches this group is available to. Like rates, a group only shows in the tax selector for the branches you pick.
- Internal tax description — optional notes for your records.
- Is Active — leave this on so the group can be used.
Edit or delete a rate or group
Find the rate or group in its list and click the pencil icon to edit, or the trash icon to delete. On a phone, open the three-dots menu on the card and choose Edit or Delete. In the edit form, change what you need and click Save. Deleting asks you to confirm, because it can’t be undone. A deleted rate or group can no longer be applied to estimates, and a deleted rate is also removed from any group that included it.Choose which branches use TaxJar
When TaxJar is turned on from Integrations, a TaxJar card with an Active badge appears above the tabs. When it’s collapsed, it lists the branches that currently use TaxJar.1
Open the branch list
Click Configure Settings on the TaxJar card.
2
Switch branches on or off
Under Choose which branches you want to use TaxJar, turn on each branch that should use TaxJar.
3
Save
Click Save Changes. You’ll see “TaxJar branches saved.” Click Cancel to close the card without saving.
